Synopsis

This is the oldest love story of all time . . .

Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, wields unparalleled power over every divine and mortal heart. Though her world is one of beauty, she is the most dangerous god of all, ruled by passion regardless of the consequences.

Ares, God of War, is her perfect contradiction: feared, unwanted and relentless in his devotion to chaos. Where she breathes life into longing, he thrives in destruction.

And yet gods are no more immune to love and loss than anyone else, and soon their lives collide. But even divine love can’t protect them from the fates of Mount Olympus, and whilst the God of War may be capable of greater love than anyone else, so may the Goddess of Love be capable of the gravest mistakes . . .

What I thought

We’re back with a bang!

It honestly feels like it’s been forever since I’ve given a book five stars, but This Immortal Heart was more than deserving of every single one.

This was my first Jennifer Saint novel, but it definitely won’t be my last. I was completely drawn into the story of Aphrodite and Ares and found myself invested in their relationship from the very beginning. Jennifer Saint has a wonderful way of making these larger-than-life gods feel real, giving them depth, emotion and vulnerability while still reminding you just how different they are from the mortals whose lives they influence.

One of my favourite aspects of the book was the way the gods viewed humanity. They watched kingdoms rise and fall, battles rage and lives change almost as though they were watching a game of chess, moving pieces from above while the mortals below lived with the consequences. I loved that perspective and it really highlighted just how detached the gods could be from the lives they were shaping.

The writing itself was beautiful and incredibly easy to read. It’s one of those books where you tell yourself you’ll read just one more chapter, only to realise you’ve flown through another hundred pages. Before I knew it, I’d reached the end, and I was genuinely sad that it was over. I wasn’t ready to leave these characters behind.

If you’re loving the recent wave of mythology retellings as much as I am, I’d absolutely recommend adding This Immortal Heart to your TBR. It’s beautifully written, emotional, immersive and completely addictive.

Overall

A stunning mythology retelling that completely pulled me in. Absorbing, beautifully written and a very easy five stars.
