Synopsis
Am I a murderer? You tell me . . .
Lucy Chase can’t remember anything about the night her best friend was murdered.
Lucky her, you’re probably thinking. Who would want that to be their last memory of someone they love?
But for Lucy, it’s become an issue.
Because everyone thinks she did it.
But that was five years ago, and Lucy has put it all behind her. Or at least, she thought she had, until an interfering yet not bad-looking podcaster offers her the opportunity to join his investigation into the night she forgot.
On the one hand, if she’s a murderer, it’s probably better to know – right? On the other, if she didn’t do it, she’ll be putting herself back in the sights of the person who did.
And either way, if you’ve already killed once, what’s to stop you from doing it again?
What I thought
This was SUCH a bingeable thriller for me and a great palate cleanser. I don’t read too many thrillers these days, even though I have hundreds on my shelf, but this book definitely reminded me I should mix it up more often. It was another of my 2025 Goodreads Challenge books, and one that I was pleasantly surprised by.
The main protagonist, Lucy is such an interesting character to follow because you’re never completely sure where you stand with her. She’s sharp, sarcastic and very aware of how she’s perceived, and the fact that she can’t remember the night everything happened means you’re constantly second guessing what’s true and what isn’t.
Character-wise, Lucy’s family mostly got on my nerves (don’t all families? 👀). The way they treated her and the assumptions they held about her added to that feeling of isolation around her character, but they weren’t people I particularly enjoyed spending page-time with. Her grandmother was the complete opposite though and I absolutely loved her. She brought a warmth to the story that really balanced some of the more frustrating dynamics and was definitely someone I would have been drawn to in real life.
The podcast sections blended into the main narrative seamlessly and did so much for the pacing. It genuinely felt like I was uncovering the truth at the same time as the host, which made the mystery even more engaging and hard to put down. And yes, there’s a little love interest thrown in for good measure, which added a nice touch without taking over the story.
I did work out a small part of the twist before it was revealed, and I would have liked a little more depth from some of the side characters, which is why this sits at a four-star read for me rather than a full five. That said, I was completely hooked on finding out what really happened. It’s a great whodunnit and the ending felt satisfying and well tied together.
Overall
Fast, twisty, and addictive. True crime podcast vibes meet a killer whodunnit. Highly recommend.
